Objective:

To reduce the risk of food and nutrition insecurity by building strong and resilient livelihoods among poor rural farming households.

Key partners:

The Southern African Development Community and the Regional Inter-Agency Standing Committee.

Beneficiaries reached:

Regional multistakeholder platforms, other United Nations agencies, governments and Non-governmental Organizations.

Activities implemented:
  • Provided technical and financial support to countries for the development of a regional resilience agenda.
  • Participated in and provided technical advisory support to quarterly Regional Vulnerability Assessment Committee (RVAC) meetings.
  • Provided leadership and technical advice to the RVAC Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Technical Working Group for the roll-out of the IPC among National Vulnerability Assessment Committees in southern Africa.
  • Provided inputs for the production and dissemination of IPC communication products.
  • Continued to support the annual Southern African Regional Climate Outlook Forum.
  • Developed and published eight monthly regional food security and nutrition situation updates in collaboration with the World Food Programme and the Famine Early Warning Systems Network.
  • Supported the organization of the first subregional farmer field school workshop.
  • Provided demand-driven technical and financial support to FAO Representation offices for disaster risk reduction and resilience programming, assessments, monitoring and evaluation,development of emergency appeals and the coordination of emergency response.
Impact:
  • Reinforced the role of FAO as a key regional player in disaster risk reduction and management and resilience building, particularly in the areas of technical support, capacity building and coordination.
  • Strengthened vulnerability assessment and analysis.
  • Contributed to the improvement of food security and nutrition information systems in the region.
  • Facilitated the progressive institutionalization of the IPC in the region.
  • Improved regional and national stakeholders’ knowledge of the food security and nutrition situation in the region and its countries.
