To improve food security, nutrition and livelihoods among returnees and their host communities in South Sudan.

Key partners:

National and State Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, County Agriculture Departments, and 13 local and international Non-governmental Organizations.

Beneficiaries reached:

108 671 direct beneficiary households, while support to 60 Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) Cluster partners indirectly reached 1.2 million people under various food security interventions.

Activities implemented:
  • Distributed veterinary drugs, acaricides and equipment for East Coast fever (ECF) treatment and tick control, benefiting 60 000 households.
  • Trained 133 veterinarians, laboratory technicians, extension officers and community animal health workers on different aspects of ECF control.
  • Distributed 27 tonnes of assorted crop and vegetable seeds, 16 750 improved plant cultivars, 10 416 kg of assorted fruit and multipurpose tree seeds, micro-irrigation equipment and over 40 000 hand tools to 40 000 households.
  • Trained approximately 9 000 beneficiaries on improved horticultural production through the farmer field school approach and an additional 2 000 famers on agroforestry production practices and tree nursery establishment and management.
  • Constructed fuel-efficient stoves for 1 500 beneficiary households in Yei County.
  • Distributed fishing gear – including 47 632 spools of twine, 17 120 boxes of hooks and 2 750 mono-filaments – to 8 671 households living near fishing grounds.
  • Provided a training of trainers course on fish net braiding and preservation techniques for six extension officers, and a training course on reducing post-harvest losses for 50 fisher folk.
  • Conducted 12 FSL Cluster coordination meetings, three subcluster meetings and two peer review meetings.
  • Supported FSL partner who does what where tracking and monitoring, post-distribution monitoring, market monitoring and the food security monitoring system.
  • Supported the National Bureau of Statistics to conduct an analysis on the March and July 2013 Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, as well as the June 2013 Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission.
  • Treated 15 600 livestock against ECF and provided spraying services to 30 402 heads of cattle, thereby reducing livestock mortality and morbidity from tick-borne diseases.
  • Improved ECF detection and diagnosis, as well as increased access to improved animal health services among livestock-dependent households in remote areas.
  • Increased crop production and productivity of farming communities.
  • Improved access to horticultural inputs, fruit tree seedlings and training has enabled farmers to become involved in year-round production, generate income from the sale of surplus and improve the nutritional status of all members of the household.
  • Established woodlots – as a result of the agroforestry component of the project – have contributed to environmental protection and conservation.
  • Harvested a total of 1 191 tonnes of fresh fish, with 32 percent of the harvested fresh fish consumed by beneficiaries and 64 percent sold to meet other household needs.
  • Strengthened FSL partner coordination and response through regular information flow and increased attendance of partners at cluster meetings.
