Full title of the project:
Operationalizing partnerships for resilience building in the Niger
Contribution:
USD 1 500 000
14/05/2014-03/03/2016
Project code:
OSRO/NER/405/USA
Objective:
To strengthen the resilience and food security and nutrition of vulnerable communities through a set of complementary interventions focused on ensuring a significant and sustainable impact at community and household levels.
Key partners:
The Ministry of Agriculture, the World Food Programme (WFP) and Non-governmental Organizations.
Beneficiaries reached:
21 912 households.
Activities implemented:
- Divided 19 640 ha of improved farmland and pastureland into plots which were distributed to targeted beneficiaries.
- Provided 19 000 beneficiaries with vouchers allowing for each household to purchase 10 kg of cereal seeds (millet/sorghum) and 5 kg of cowpea in selected input shops.
- Established a revolving mechanism to ensure seed sustainability and availability during the following seasons, and set up a management committee.
- Selected and provided over 5 tonnes of grass seeds and 42 500 seedlings to plant in 750 ha of improved pastureland for fodder production.
- Established small-scale irrigation systems around WFP’s water catchment infrastructures which were used for vegetable production.
- Provided 1 119 beneficiaries with 1 502 kg of vegetable seeds, 50 tonnes of potato cuttings and 20 tonnes of maize to support vegetable production on irrigated lands and food diversification.
- Trained beneficiaries on vegetable and crop production, on organizing farmers’ associations and on food security and nutrition.
- Provided 912 households (of which over 70 percent women) with 3 009 breeding goats that were also vaccinated and dewormed.
Impact:
- Cultivated a total land area of 129 730 ha and produced 107 588.2 tonnes of cowpea, millet and sorghum valued.
- Produced 841 tonnes of fodder in 2015 enough to support 4 946 goats for a year, and 775 tonnes in 2016 enough to feed 4 560 goats.
- Cultivated 60 ha of land and produced 442 tonnes of vegetables, potatoes and maize, allowing for beneficiaries to cover food needs for an additional 2 to 3 months and improve their diets thanks to the consumption of vegetables rich in micronutrients.
- Increased beneficiaries’ sources of income, allowing for 9 out of 10 households to have two different sources of income.
