To contribute to reducing the risk of food and nutrition insecurity by building strong and resilient livelihoods among poor, rural farming households.

Activities implemented:
  • Organized a review of agriculture and food and nutrition information systems in the region.
  • Organized a study tour to learn from FAO Zambia’s experiences in using ICT for agriculture, food and nutrition monitoring and reporting for representatives from six countries.
  • Provided regular technical advisory support to the Regional Vulnerability Assessment Committee meetings.
  • Participated in the Technical Working Group to develop the SADC Post-2016 Strategic Plan.
  • Provided technical and financial support to update guidance documents on the integration of HIV, gender and nutrition into vulnerability assessment and analysis.
  • Continued to support the roll out of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
  • Developed and published three regional food and nutrition security updates with WFP and FEWS NET.
  • Supported Country Gender Assessments in Angola, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland, as well as assisting in the development of gender strategies for the WFP Regional Office for Southern Africa and for a national NGO in Mozambique – Mugede.
  • Worked closely with RIASCO in developing the Regional Action Plan for El Niño (FAO leads the Resilience pillar).
  • Through the FNSWG, provided advisory and technical support to improve national programming for DDR for food and nutrition security.
  • Built consensus around technical guidance for data collection and indicators that should be monitored at national level to improved agriculture, food and nutrition information for decision-making.
  • Enhanced regional and national capacity for IPC analysis.
  • RIASCO Regional Action Plan for El Niño generated USD 894 million to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to more than 1.6 million drought-affected households.
  • Support to SADC led to the SADC Emergency Response Action Plan to Mitigate Impacts of the 2015/16 El Niño, Response Monitoring Framework for the SADC Regional Appeal for Humanitarian and Recovery Support, and the validation of the SADC Regional Preparedness and Response Strategy and Fund, among others.
