The vandalism of hives and theft of honey in Nigeria is a perennial problem that has led to the loss of investments and gains by beekeepers and discouraged consumers as well. Beekeepers find it difficult to securely situate their apiaries as they describe it as simply 'no-go' areas for placing hives. As most beekeepers only keep an estimated five percent of their hives on their own land close to them where they can reach on a daily basis, the direct control of their commercial enterprise is reliant on availability of safe sites in areas out of their direct control and most time very far from them. Continual theft and property damage drives businesses into the ground. Producing locally in Nigeria is becoming commercially unviable, as beekeepers battle to find safe sites that equally have a good forage area for bees and devoid of pollutants around the foraging zones. Thus, there is a need for an effective, simple, cost-effective and labour-saving security system for the hives.
