Tanzania bans 44 pesticides unsafe for human health and the environment

Deputy Agriculture Minister Anthony Mavunde informed Parliament yesterday that the government has prohibited the use of 44 pesticides deemed detrimental to human health and the environment. He was addressing a question from Special Seats MP Asha Abdullah Juma, who inquired about the progress of government reviews to identify hazardous pesticides still in use. Mavunde, who also represents Dodoma Urban, stated that from 2018 to 2021, the government conducted a review to pinpoint harmful pesticides. The review identified 44 pesticides containing active ingredients that pose risks to human health and the environment. Consequently, the government, through the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA), has initiated measures to discontinue the use of these 44 chemicals and is continuing to inspect warehouses and shops to identify other harmful pesticides.
