Soyfoods and the soya boom in Mozambique: A look at agro-food system change

Following the remarkable growth of Mozambique’s poultry sector in recent years, the soya boom in the north of Mozambique is restructuring patterns of production and changing local diets in the northern districts of Gurúè and Alto Mòlocué in Zambézia province. This documentary film, by PLAAS in partnership with ADECRU (Acção Académica para o Desenvolvimento das Comunidades Rurais) explores agro-food system change in rural Mozambique within the context of increasing levels of agro-investment and the promotion of soybean production. It highlights the differentiated impacts of the soya boom on household food security, livelihoods and food production patterns in Gurúè district. Higher up the value chain, the film looks at the linkages of the soya boom, which is said to be driving down domestic chicken prices, and new emerging chicken farmers in Alto Mòlocué.
