Food Policies and their Implications on Overweight and Obesity Trends in Selected Countries in the Near East and North Africa Region
The Near East and North Africa (NENA) countries are known for high levels of overweight and obesity. These patterns are observed for both children and adults.Despite some variations across countries, on average 60 to 70 percent of adults in the NENA region are overweight, with obesity rates amounting to about half of this. For instance, according to the 2015 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), 75 percent of adult Egyptian women are overweight and 48 percent are obese. These rates are almost twice the world average rates of overweight and obesity. Most predictions suggest that these rates are expected to further increase in the next few decades
