Description:
IYHA was launched in 2007 in response to an overwhelming need identified by our partner communities in the Lwengo district. The mission of IYHA is to empower children and families in rural Uganda to rise above the constraints of poverty through education and business development. Activities to meet the overall mission of the organization include: (1)Assisting youth and young adults in attaining a secondary or vocational education; (2) Providing 'hand-up' assistance to families to develop their own revenue streams through small- scale livestock and agricultural businesses, (3) Empowering women with the tools to attain economic self-sufficiency and food security, and (4) Creating opportunities for communities to develop stronger ties amongst themselves while shifting individual farming practices from subsistence farming to small to medium plot agriculture. From 2007 to 2021, IYHA has helped implement community-identified solutions to facilitate the following: over 33,000 people impacted through education and enterprise support; 2,200 successful businesses launched; more than 1,300 students enabled to attend secondary, vocational or four-year universities; over 550 women graduated through a female-led entrepreneurship training program, and over 3,400 community members trained in commercial agriculture.
