Sustainable Harvest International SHI

Type of Organization: International Organization
Areas of work: Agroecology, Agroforestry, Education, Food and nutrition, Mountain farming
Region: Latin America and the Caribbean
Country: United States of America
Description:
Since 1997, Sustainable Harvest International has provided agroecology training to over 3,000 smallholder family farms. Through diversification of crops and ecological farming practices, families improve their diets, income and health, while reversing the degradation of soils, protecting water sources, increasing biodiversity and stabilizing the climate. A local trainer visits each of approximately 30 farms every week or two for four years, tailoring technical assistance to each participant's goals, preferences, and situation with new skills and knowledge building upon each other from one season to another. Participants in the SHI program have restored 30,000 acres of previously degraded land through soil health and planting over 4 million trees. SHI currently has programs in Belize, Honduras and Panama, a strong dynamic board of directors, eight headquarters staff, 26 program staff, and a lively community of dedicated donors. SHI's new scaling initiative has set a vision to transform a million farms by 2030 through expansion, innovation and partnering with other institutions.
