Practical train-the-trainer fishers’ safety course

25/10/2022

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is rolling out a train-the-trainer workshop to provide practical training experience in fishing safety to course participants who can then provide safety training to local fishers in their regions.

The training package used for these courses covers a large range of subjects, such as:

  • preparing for emergencies at sea,
  • small boat safety and basic engine maintenance,
  • radio communication,
  • survival at sea,
  • emergency first aid,
  • safety risk management,
  • marine traffic rules, and
  • trainer fundamentals.

A first workshop was delivered in the Caribbean (2020) and Pacific regions (2021) and in the Near East and Central Asia regions (2021/2022). Train-the-Trainer in Safety at Sea workshops have been conducted with the five East African countries of Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles with support from the regional FAO project entitled “Enhancing Livelihoods, Food Security and Maritime Safety through Increased Resilience of Fishing Communities Dependent on Coral Reef Fisheries in the African Coastal Countries of the Indian Ocean” – REEFFISH Project funded by the Government of Japan.
