Sustainable soil and fertilizer management for Africa: a case study from Uganda | Online

FAO and its members are committed to implementing capacity-building activities in the field to support sustainable soil and fertilizer management in Africa. A good case is the project “Capacity development on sustainable soil management for Uganda”. It is finacially supported by the People’s Republic of China under the framework of the South South Cooperation (SSC). The project is part of FAO efforts during the period from 2021 to 2025 to strengthen capacity of public and private institutions and communities to sustainably manage natural resources, restore degraded lands and protect vital ecosystems. The project aims to develop capacity on sustainable soil management through South-South cooperation, within the framework of Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN) and the International Code of Conduct for Sustainable Use and Management of Fertilizers (the Fertilizer Code), with a special focus on balanced fertilization.

The objectives of the workshop are to discuss the main challenges on soil and fertilizer management in Africa, with a focus on the state of soils in Uganda and the identification of ways to promote sustainable soil and fertiliser management.
