On 12 January 2010, Haiti was hit by a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that devastated the country and caused massive loss of life. The earthquake was an unprecedented urban tragedy that had an enormous impact also on the rural sector. With three-quarters of Haitians living in rural areas and 80 percent of these struggling to survive on less than USD 2 a day, immediate and large-scale support to the agriculture sector was vital. One year after the earthquake, FAO has so far been able to reach close to three million people, providing them with seeds, tools and fertilizers and helping them start farming again.
