El Programa de la FAO y la Unión Europea (UE) sobre Aplicación de las leyes, gobernanza y comercio forestales (Programa FAO-UE FLEGT) trata de reducir y, eventualmente, eliminar el aprovechamiento maderero ilegal. Con apoyo de sus donantes, este Programa financia proyectos diseñados por gobiernos, organizaciones de la sociedad civil y del sector privado en América Latina, África y Asia para mejorar la gobernanza forestal. El Programa trabaja con apoyo del Plan de acción FLEGT de la Comisión Europea para promover la producción y el consumo de madera de origen legal, garantizando financiación para proyectos y ayudando en todas sus etapas, desde el diseño original hasta los productos finales. La disminución del aprovechamiento maderero ilegal contribuye a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible mitigando la pobreza (ODS 1), garantizando la seguridad alimentaria (ODS 2), mitigando el cambio climático (ODS 13) y manejando los bosques de manera sostenible (ODS 15).
