Workshop on aquaculture perceptions

10/10/2015 - 11/10/2015

Increasing public understanding and acceptance of aquaculture – the role of truth, transparency and transformation.

Time: 8:30-19:00 (until 13:00 on Sunday)
Venue: Hotel NH Palacio de Vigo, Avenida García Barbón, 17-19

Organized by FAO, the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) and the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH), this workshop will bring together members of the aquaculture industry (different farming systems in developed and developing countries), governments, international organizations, NGOs, retailers, communication experts, scientists, certification programs and the media, to exchange ideas and experiences on how to improve the public understanding and perception of aquaculture.

The aquaculture industry is facing numerous challenges in order to provide more seafood to meet increasing demand while mitigating the potential negative effects. The workshop participants will discuss the main issues in aquaculture, identify where misperceptions exist and agree on future steps to be taken to achieve more transparency and sustainability in the sector. To achieve change at higher speed and higher scale it makes sense for the aquaculture industry to work together to address the challenges that they share. Thus, the hope is that this workshop will foster cooperation among farming companies, small producers and related private initiatives (e.g. associations, clusters etc.) and promote public-private collaborations.

The workshop runs from 10 to 11 October. The findings will be published and disseminated in the media and different fora.
