Kenya National Policy Forum to Share MAFAP Findings and Recommendations
The event brought policymakers and other stakeholders together to discuss the impacts of policies and public spending on agriculture and food security. The country team presented key findings and recommendations on market price incentives and disincentives for six commodities (i.e. maize, live cattle, sorghum, tea, coffee and sugar) and on public expenditure in support of agriculture and rural development. Participants included representatives from several institutions such as the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), Ministry of Livestock Development, Ministry of Devolution and Planning, Kenya Sugar Authority, National Cereals and Produce Board, Agricultural Sector Coordination Unit (ASCU), Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and Kenya Tea Development Agency Ltd. The forum received excellent media coverage and guest speakers included Mr. Ephraim Mukisira (Director of KARI), Mr. Wellington Lubira (Chief Economist of the MOA), Mr. Dan Rugabira (FAOR in Kenya), Mr. Steven Were Omamo (Director of Policy and Advocacy at AGRA), Mr. Mussolini Kithome (Coordinator at ASCU) and Mr. Keith Wiebe (Deputy Director of ESA at FAO in Rome).
The presentations generated lively discussions and strong backing from ASCU. Partners expressed interest in continued collaboration, and stakeholders expressed interest in using MAFAP’s results in continued dialogue with policymakers. Overall, MAFAP’s analysis was well received by participants. Senior level officials were interviewed during the event and featured in the following articles:
