Stories from the Field

Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet - and its people. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration was launched on June 05, 2021 and aims to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean. The Decade is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, for the benefit of people and nature.

Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), The UN Decade is building a strong, broad-based global movement to ramp up restoration and put the world on track for a sustainable future.

The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration also aligns with the Decade of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals. It will also build on the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

The UN recognizes the critical role of the many initiatives already underway, led by governments, businesses, farmers and citizens who have and continue to work towards protecting and restoring ecosystems that we all depend on.  It is thus critical that work on ecosystem restoration by the government, local and tribal communities, women, civil society groups, scientific and academic institutions and businesses across the country be documented. This becomes relevant for FAO, as it leads globally, the Task Force on Best Practices.

FAO has created a repository of 'stories from the field' that highlight success in the area of ecosystem restoration. These will make a significant contribution to the global database.
