Over 50 students joined FAO in the celebration of World Soils Day under the global theme “Caring for our planet starts from the Ground. In collaboration with Jamaica’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, through the Agricultural Land Management, Public Parks and Research and Development Divisions, students of the Ebony Park Academy and Four Paths Primary School in were engaged in discussions and activities on soil conservation.

Through role-playing, engagement with exhibitioners, live soil experiments and discussions on the importance of soil, the day allowed for strong advocacy on the importance of soil and students were given the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and share their ideas on soil conservation within the home and school.

World Soil Day is a relatively new celebration of FAO which provokes thought and action towards sustainable soil management and the importance of soil in many aspects of our lives. The 2017 theme highlighted linkages with soil and climate change, forced migration, biodiversity, clean water, nutrition and food security.
