FAO participates in Jamaica's 66th Staging of the Denbigh Agricultural Show

20/07/2018

FAO joins in Jamaica's 66th staging of the Denbigh Agricultural Industrial and Food Show, which attracts hundreds of food and agriculture enthusiasts each year at the Denbigh Showground in May Pen, Clarendon. This year FAO's participation will promote the small ruminants and ginger value chains, FAO and the Sustainable Development Goals and explore how we can reduce food loss and waste at the household and community levels.

As FAO works with the Government of Jamaica to develop a Small Ruminants Industry Development Plan, this year's 66th staging of the Denbigh Show offers a unique opportunity to expose Jamaicans to the diverse products and tastes that can be obtained from goat produce. It also offers an opportunity to highlight the potential that exists for adding value to small ruminants thereby contributing to the development of the small ruminants industry.

FAO’s participation will also seek to highlight our Ginger Value Chain Project with the Government of Jamaica and focus specifically on raising awareness on how we can cultivate disease free ginger and redevelop the ginger sector whilst exploring the development of the ginger value chain.

Reducing food loss and waste is also crucial as we celebrate food and agriculture with such a great multitude. We will therefore raise awareness of the general public and provide tips on how we can minimise our food waste at the household and community levels.

Finally, FAO will use the three-day event to highlight how food and agriculture is relevant in achiveing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. We will help persons to understand the goals and how we can all contribute to achieving these goals by 2030

The Denbigh Agricultural Industrial Food Show will be held from August 4-6, 2018
