WaPOR v3 data now available in the new portal


FAO is pleased to announce that WaPOR version 3 data is now available at all levels.

WaPOR, FAO’s portal to monitor water productivity through open-access of remotely sensed derived data, assists countries in monitoring water productivity, identifying water productivity gaps, proposing solutions to reduce these gaps and contributing to a sustainable increase of agricultural production.

Since its first release in 2017, WaPOR data has been continuously improved and a new version of the dataset, version 3, is now available in the new portal.

FAO, the data service provider eLeaf, the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) have been hard at work to verify the quality of the new data that is now available to the public at all levels:

  • Level 1 data with a global coverage at 300m resolution
  • Level 2 data for Africa, the Near East, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Colombia, at 100m resolution
  • Level 3 data for specific areas in WaPOR partner countries at 20m resolution.  

The temporal coverage of version 3 is from 2018 until present.  

The new portal offers a wide array of features that are meant to provide tools for users to make the most of the data, such as:  

Faster and more user-friendly interface that makes data manipulation richer and more intuitive: 

  • A benchmark that supports several layers, including layers in different resolutions
  • The ability to split the screen and compare different layers or different dates for the same layer
  • The possibility to visualize an animation of time series and see the data evolve
  • A wide range of base maps
  • The ability to share one’s results with others. 

Improved analysis capabilities: 

  • Time series and cumulative time series for points and areas
  • Deviation from average analysis. 

Easy data download: 

  • from drawn area-of-interest
  • from uploaded area-of-interest (coming soon)
  • by country (coming soon)
  • as mentioned earlier, better data integration with the ability to upload user’s own data or any WaPOR spatial dataset to contextualize the analysis. 

By providing near real time pixel information, WaPOR opens the door for service-providers to assist farmers in obtaining more reliable yields and improving their livelihoods. At the same time, irrigation authorities have access to information to modernize their irrigation schemes and government agencies can use this information to promote and increase the efficient use of their natural resources. 

More data will become available over the next few months as well as more portal features.
