Nicaragua Plant Protection Legislation

04/05/2020

Nicaragua passed a new Law on Plant Protection (Ley 1020 de Protección Fitosanitaria de Nicaragua– DO 26-03-2020) on 11 March 2020.  The Development Law Service (LEGN) provided technical support to the national plant protection organization, in collaboration with the IPPC and other legal specialists, to develop this new and state of the art law.  The need for a new law was recommended as a result of the Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation Tool (PCE). Nicaragua is now fully aligned with the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and its implementing standards and recommendations concerning plant health and the trade of plants and plant products.  Nicaragua has also requested FAO support to develop new seeds legislation.
