Information and reporting system for water and agriculture in Asian monsoon areas - Capacity development

Paddy FieldThe Ministerial Meeting on Water for Food and Agriculture that adopted the Ministerial Recommendation addressed three major challenges: "Food security and poverty alleviation", "Sustainable water use" and "Partnership". In order to address these three challenges in the context of paddy cultivation, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries proposed to set up an International Network for Water and Ecosystem in Paddy Fields (INWEPF), which was established in 2004. FAO has always been an active partner to the INWEPF-network and therefore decided to provide support to the 3rd INWEPF Steering Meeting and Workshop "Rice Paddy - Now, Tomorrow and the Future", held 17 - 19 September 2006 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The ESPIM-project will also provide its support to the 4th INWEPF Steering Meeting and Symposium "Prosperity and Sustainability of Paddy Fields and Ecosystem", on 5-7 July 2007 in Bangkok.

A three day training workshop called "Modernization strategy of large scale rice-based irrigation systems in Terrai" was held from 26 - 28 April 2006 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
