Communities of action can be an efficient and easily accessible way to connect practitioners, share knowledge, and co-learn. They are result-oriented networks whose members share a strong interest in a given area and, as such, are valued by users representing a unique source of information to stay up-to-date  by deepening own knowledge, sharing experiences and job opportunities.

This is the case of the new community of action just set up by the FAO’s Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (FAO LEAP) Partnership. The Livestock, Climate and Environment (LCE) Community of Action is a forum for the discussion on sustainable feed and livestock production systems. Open to all stakeholders, it comes together to share experience, knowledge, and best practices on collectively-agreed methods developed by intergovernmental organizations such as FAO and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The group also involves different initiatives under FAO, including the Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM), the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL), the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA), and others calling for substantive action on climate change and environmental improvement.

The LCE Community of Action aims to generate evidence for the sector's bold improvement on climate and the environment, by applying and adapting tested, proven methodologies and tools, such as the FAO LEAP guidelines, and jointly tackle current challenges by facilitating development and dissemination of knowledge to scale up uptake of better environmental practices. Through informative discussions, members will develop a shared repertoire of useful resources, experiences, lessons learned, tools, and ways of addressing recurring problems associated with feed and livestock production. This virtual space welcomes practitioners, policymakers, private sector, civil society, NGOs, researchers, scientists, and farmers alike, who all seek relevant information.

Exchanges between Community members occur via email, in order to remain accessible to low-bandwidth users.

This initiative is part of the Phase 3 activities and will contribute to collect feedback for the improvement of the technical documents and to facilitate climate action and environmental improvement of production practices also through the use of the FAO LEAP guidelines at varying scales. The Community is hosted by the LEAP Secretariat and will also serve to inform members on the latest news and developments of the Partnership.
