The FAO report "Methane emissions in livestock and rice systems: Sources, quantification, mitigation, and metrics" had its official launch during the Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation, drawing applause from over 150 policymakers, livestock and climate change experts, and stakeholders worldwide.

The aim of the event was to present the key findings and implications of methane emissions and mitigations regarding the role of livestock and rice systems in climate action. The launch featured a series of high-level technical presentations, interspersed with questions from the attending audience. The impact of the event extended worldwide through a webcast, generating significant interest and curiosity among experts who expressed their readiness to draw inspiration from the report to enhance sustainable livestock production.

About the report

This FAO report provides an overview of current technical and innovative approaches to mitigate methane emissions in livestock and rice systems. It assesses cutting-edge mitigation strategies across various ruminant systems, considering their effectiveness, safety aspects, impact on other greenhouse gases, and their economic, regulatory, and societal implications. The report also underscores the urgent need for further research to identify economically viable methane mitigation solutions. Additionally, it explores management practices that can improve soil redox potential, effectively reducing methane production and emissions from rice fields.

The report is the outcome of collaborative efforts within the FAO Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership's Technical Advisory Group, a multidisciplinary team consisting of 54 international scientists and FAO experts. These efforts were conducted under the guidance of the FAO LEAP Steering Committee, the highest decision-making body of the Partnership. The official launch coincided with the inaugural FAO Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation.

About the FAO Global Conference

The first-ever FAO Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation attracted over 700 participants, including 27 ministers or senior government officials, 100 youth representatives, and numerous researchers and representatives from multilateral organizations. Over three days of high-level discussions at FAO headquarters, the conference showcased innovative local projects and significant advances in knowledge related to the global endeavor to make livestock production more environmentally sustainable, supportive of rural livelihoods, and capable of meeting the world's increasing protein demands.
