This work is part of two affiliated projects funded by SDC in the framework of the Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) Programme, also known as 10-Year Framework for Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP), a global multi-stakeholder partnership to accelerate the shift towards more sustainable food systems.

The food waste reduction part fits into the One Planet network activities aimed to implement the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP), which supports the global shift to SCP and the achievement of the SDG 12.

The “Mainstreaming food loss reduction initiatives for smallholders in food deficit areas” project, jointly implemented by the Rome-Based UN Agencies (RBA) FAO, IFAD, and WFP, funded by the Government of Switzerland (SDC) was aimed to improve food security and income generation of smallholder farmers in food deficit areas through reduction of post-harvest food losses in targeted value chains (Phase 1: 2013-17 and Phase 2: 2017-20).

In the framework of its post-harvest management programme SDC funded other related projects in Ethiopia and to other partners including HELVETAS.

By mobilizing the individual strengths of the three agencies, the joint project generated an impact and influence in stimulating Member Countries to take action to reduce food losses and is expected to be a model for future collaboration and up-scaling of RBA collaboration.
