Under the common theme “From REDD+ Readiness to Implementation and Results: FAO’s support to countries”, a set of flyers was recently published by FAO. The flyers aim to facilitate countries’ reflection and decision-making on how to plan and implement actions to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.  

The Paris Agreement provides a landmark global commitment to tackle one of the biggest challenges of our time: to keep global average temperature below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Country commitments are reflected in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs); REDD+ appears in many of them as a prominent component of the fight against climate change. Indeed, mitigation actions in land use, land-use change and forestry are referenced in 83 per cent of all countries’ NDCs.

Countries are increasingly moving from their REDD+ readiness towards REDD+ implementation and results. By early 2018, four countries (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Malaysia) had submitted results of REDD+ to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), equivalent to approximately six gigatonnes CO2. Many other countries are preparing and implementing national REDD+ strategies. By doing so, they are working across sectors to address the drivers of deforestation, all the while contributing to other global commitment such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the Aichi Targets, the Sendai Framework and the Bonn Challenge.

Building on its broad expertise in agriculture and forestry, and specifically on sustainable forest and land management, FAO works together with developing countries and several partners in designing and implementing their REDD+ strategies, action plans and investment plans as well as measuring, monitoring and reporting their results. With its comprehensive spectrum of expertise, FAO can help countries to achieve emissions reductions across all land sectors.

In this framework, FAO has recently published “From REDD+ Readiness to Implementation and Results: FAO’s support to countries” thematic folder, aiming to facilitate countries’ reflection and decision making on how to move towards implementation of actions to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. The folder is as a “step-by-step publication” consisting in a series of flyers/short readings, with new thematic areas to be progressively included.    

The first seven of these short thematic readings is now available and focuses on several important areas of REDD+ actions that contribute to climate change mitigation (named  “Policies and Measures” by UNFCCC), with co-benefits on adaptation, biodiversity, livelihoods and sustainable development.
