Senegal: community listeners’ clubs on the frontline to stop the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease

Last month on October 17th, the World Health Organization officially declared the end of the Ebola virus disease outbreak in the Republic of Senegal. The country was praised for its diligence in halting the transmission of the virus, however the UN agency warned that, Senegal’s geographical position makes the country vulnerable to additional imported cases of Ebola virus disease and it must continue to remain vigilant.

As an at-risk country, social mobilization is key and communication crucial. That’s where community listener clubs come in. They are being used as part of a strategy to spread awareness in rural communities about the disease. The question is: are they effective?
