Sustained drought response in Somalia

Nov 2019

Three consecutive failed rainy seasons since early 2016 have drastically reduced Somalis' incomes, assets and food sources. The last three cereal harvests have been very poor (ranging from 37-70 percent below average), herds have diminished by up to 60 percent among poor rural households in parts of the country, and high prices continue to push basic food and non-food items out of reach of the most vulnerable.

FAO's project meet immediate food security needs of rural drought-affected farming and agropastoral families in southern Somalia, while restoring their own food production. FAO will assist 8 200 households with unconditional cash transfers, together with emergency livelihood inputs and training ("Cash+").
