2.4a Country names, flags and maps
Country names, flags and maps are politically sensitive issues. For this reason, it is important that when placing this type of information on a Web site it is correct and in accordance with UN and FAO policy and practice.
The FAOTERM Names of Countries (NOCS) database provides a full listing of country names including all FAO member countries. It consists of the names of countries or areas including adjectives of nationality, capital cities and currency units (in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Italian). It also includes a list of FAO Members in alphabetical order in six languages, which is based on official United Nations practice. The names provided on this database should be used for all working and official purposes of the Organization.
Country flags should not used as language links.
According to FAO's legal office, there is no official written direction on what types of maps and boundaries should be used on FAO Web sites. However, it is strongly recommended that when creating maps, you refer to the United Nations Maps and Geographic Information Resources (Cartographic Section) Web site for guidance.
