Michelle Obama’s call to action on America’s childhood obesity epidemic

Michelle Obama is publicly voicing her opposition to a recent initiative aimed at loosening nutrition standards in American schools. The current standards ensure that school meals deliver essential nutrients to children by limiting calories and salt and integrating more nutritious foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables. “We know that there is a childhood obesity epidemic, and a lot of it comes from the fact that we have lost that core understanding of how to best nourish our kids. And the most important place to start tackling this issue is in our schools,” she said. She also emphasized the important role nutrition plays in children’s academic success.
