Event Recording "Prospects for achieving equitable food systems through agroecology - An Agroecology Theme Day under the framework of the Science Summit at the 78th United Nations General Assembly"
This video highlights the urgent need for integrated, systemic actions to address accelerating global challenges such as hunger, biodiversity loss, inequality, and climate change. Many Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are off-track, emphasizing the need for agroecological transitions to achieve equitable food security while reversing environmental degradation and tackling climate issues.
Agroecological approaches require a paradigm shift towards transdisciplinary methods in agricultural research, supported by local, national, and global policies that encourage adoption. Unlocking finance for agroecological research and ensuring access to scientific evidence are critical for scaling these transformative approaches. The agroecological principle of co-creating and sharing knowledge is essential for building sustainable and resilient food systems.
Organized by the Agroecology Coalition and the Transformative Partnership Platform on Agroecology, an Agroecology Theme Day under the UNGA 78 Science Summit aims to develop actionable recommendations for the 2024 Summit of the Future. Building on outcomes from the 2023 UN Food Systems Summit in Rome, this event will shape discussions at COP28 in UAE. Through panel and roundtable sessions, participants will address the progress needed in science, policy, and practice to advance agroecological transitions and contribute to multiple SDGs simultaneously.
