Agroecology Knowledge Hub

Food sovereignty and Agroecology are the adequate framework to develop innovations for family farming

This paper, written by Schola Campesina, highlights the importance of understanding how the term ''innovation'' is passed off as good in itself. The meaning of innovation today incorporates a large part of the capitalist system that seeks to transform food production irreversibly from a communal, social, democratic act into a commercial business for a few.

The paper showcases that big data and private control of knowledge are threatening the future of agriculture. According to the authors, there is no Right to Food without peasant knowledge and capacity to innovate. Agroecology recognizes peasant knowledge as a core element that can bring about favourable innovation for family farming.

The challenge of innovation reveals a clear choice: who should possess the knowledge?
