Sub-national initiatives on Agroecology – the case of Sicily, Catalonia and Murang’a County

This article highlights sub-national agroecology initiatives in Sicily (Italy), Catalonia (Spain), and Murang’a County (Kenya) and how each region integrates agroecological principles to address climate challenges, biodiversity loss, and sustainable farming.

It further detailed the unique approaches in which the three regions have developed their agroecological strategies. Sicily enforces a law supporting biodiversity, organic practices, and water conservation. Catalonia promotes sustainable and organic farming through certifications and a sustainability calculator. Murang’a County also focuses on organic agriculture policies, training, and international market alignment.

These three cases underscore the role of regional governments in advancing agroecology as a replicable model for sustainable food systems.
