15 Cover Crop Species Certified by Cambodia General Directorate of Agriculture

This article highlights the certification of 15 cover crop species by Cambodia's General Directorate of Agriculture (GDA), marking a pivotal achievement in the country's agricultural sector. With support from the ASSET project, the certification was awarded to the Department of Agricultural Land Resources Management (DALRM), paving the way for the commercialization of cover crops to enhance sustainable farming practices.

The Variety Registration Certificate, central to Cambodia's Law on Plant Variety Protection and Plant Breeder's Rights, ensures the legal and regulated development, distribution, and protection of crop varieties. This certification safeguards breeders' rights, promotes innovation, and guarantees high-quality crop varieties for farmers, mitigating risks from substandard seeds.

The newly certified species include legumes, grasses, and other cover crops like Crotalaria junceaSesbania sesban, and Sorghum bicolor, each chosen for its suitability to diverse soil types and farming systems in Cambodia. These crops are instrumental in improving soil health, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and supporting sustainable agricultural practices through nitrogen fixation, erosion control, and enhanced soil structure.

The certification addresses previous regulatory gaps, enabling private-sector involvement in developing seed value chains and expanding access for farmers. Collaborative efforts between GDA, CIRAD, and local communities over 15 years have culminated in this milestone, allowing farmers to adopt more resilient and productive farming systems. This development is expected to boost local seed markets, enhance rural livelihoods, and further sustainable agriculture.

In conclusion, the certification of these cover crop species is a major step forward in Cambodia's agricultural sustainability, providing farmers with tools to improve soil health, reduce reliance on chemical inputs, and promote eco-friendly farming, thereby contributing to long-term agricultural and environmental benefits.
