Implementation of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources in the field

Implementation of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources in the field

BACKGROUND

The Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources  is the only internationally agreed plan for management of livestock genetic diversity. It was formally adopted by means of the Interlaken Declaration in September of 2007. In the Interlaken Declaration, FAO Members recognized that they bear the main responsibility for implementation of the Global Plan of Action. Members also invited all stakeholders, including international organizations, to join them in their common cause. This event presents highlights of recent efforts made by FAO Members in implementation of the Global Plan of Action.

SCALA-MEDI: Mediterranean sheep and chicken diversity

SCALA-MEDI: Mediterranean sheep and chicken diversity

BACKGROUND

The European Union PRIMA project SCALA-MEDI is a model for sustainable farming in the Mediterranean region. Engaging Italy, France, Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco, the project optimizes conservation and breeding of local animal genetic resources with a focus on climate adaptation and consumer needs. Experts showcase innovative methods in characterizing sheep and chicken breeds through advanced sensor, genetic, and epigenetic techniques. SCALA-MEDI aims to enhance resilience, foster collaboration, and inspire sustainable breeding across Mediterranean nations.
