Tackling antimicrobial resistance
in food-producing animals

Lessons learned in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

This publication describes how the United Kingdom has managed to halve the sale of antimicrobials in the country’s livestock industry thanks to a multi-sectoral collaborative approach between the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and farmers, producers, and veterinarians.

The document is a tribute to all those who have driven change in the UK livestock industry by leading responsible antimicrobial use and building trusted relationships among all stakeholders, and inspiring sustainable behaviour change. Key has been allowing the industry to take ownership of the issue and supporting its efforts to reduce antimicrobial use.
