Achieving food and nutrition security in the Chittagong Hill Tracts - Bangladesh

FAO's work in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) in 2013-2014 through ECHO-funded project "Early Recovery Assistance to Restore Agriculture-based Livelihoods in Critically Food insecure Areas of the CHT".The CHT is a geographically and socio-culturally distinct region located in southeastern Bangladesh. It is home to a large number of small ethnic communities and is covered by hills, which have made it unique in terms of agricultural practices and livelihood patterns.Following two decades of conflict, CHT remains one of the most vulnerable regions in Bangladesh. Most indigenous people are not secure in relation to food availability throughout the year. FAO supported 6,200 food insecure households in remote areas of CHT - Sajek union, Rangamati and Thanchi upazila, Bandarban - in order to improve their livelihoods through sustainable management of natural resources and technological innovations in agriculture

Mr Hiroyuki Konuma, Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific, visited Sri Lanka from 8 to 10 July 2014. In this event, he met Hon. Dr Rajitha Senaratne, Minister for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Hon. Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development and Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Minister for Agriculture. He also visited the FAO/EU project on Integrated Irrigation and Agricultural Livelihood Development where have been badly affected by the prolonged civil war which ended recently.

The goal throughout the year is to raise awareness of the challenges facing family farming -- which is the largest employer in the world. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says it is crucial to promote the sector as a way of production in order to combat hunger and poverty and contribute to healthy food systems.

ICN2 – NUTRITION: A PUBLIC ISSUE

Over 840 million people are chronically undernourished, with the proportion of undernourished only falling 17 per cent since the early 1990s. Malnutrition is responsible for about half of all child deaths under five years of age, causing over three million deaths every year. These are the latest statistics from FAO and WHO, which are calling for strong political commitment to tackle malnutrition ahead of a high-level international conference to be held in November.
