
Mei Xu Rong has nearly four decades of experience in researching dry-land agriculture, water resource management, and policy and strategic issues relating to climate change and agriculture. His research focuses on dry-land water-saving agriculture to improve the efficiency of precipitation utilization, sustainable water resource management, and policy to improve livelihoods and resilience in the dry-land marginal areas against the increasing impact of climate change. With more than 100 scientific papers and 10 authored books, Mei’s research contributions have significantly advanced the development of dry-land agriculture and technological progress in China as well as in the world.
Currently, Mei is the Principal Scientist on dry-land agriculture at the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS-IEDA), and Vice President of China Association of Agricultural Science Societies.
Over the past 36 years, Mei has fulfilled various leadership positions, including as Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, principal scientist and Director General in research institutes and major programs. He is adept at strategic planning and policy development at the national, institutional and local levels, and has championed the development of national research initiatives, establishment of new research centers and cross-discipline programs, as well as multi-stakeholder debate and consultations on agriculture and development related issues.
