Committee on Agriculture (COAG)

First Session of the COAG Sub-Committee on Livestock

At its twenty-seventh session, COAG established the Sub-Committee on Livestock as an intergovernmental forum with a mandate to discuss and build consensus on livestock issues and priorities, and advise COAG, and through it, the FAO Council and the FAO Conference, on technical and policy programmes and activities needed to optimize the contribution of livestock to poverty alleviation, food security and nutrition, sustainable livelihoods, and the realization of the 2030 Agenda. The establishment of the Sub-Committee was subsequently endorsed by the 42th FAO Conference in June 2021.

The first session of the COAG Sub-Committee on Livestock will be conducted as a virtual event from 16‑18 March 2022.

During this first session, delegates will discuss substantive items related to:

Sustainable livestock for food security, nutrition, and poverty reduction

  • Contribution of livestock to food security, sustainable agrifood systems, nutrition and healthy diets
  • Good practices to sustainably enhance the productivity of small-scale livestock keepers
  • Integrating the livestock sector into national climate actions while considering its adaptation and resilience to climate change, and contribution to biodiversity and ecosystem services

One Health 

  • Strengthening national coordinated capacities to manage the risks of animal diseases and emerging zoonoses through the One Health approach
  • Progress towards the eradication of Peste des Petits Ruminants
  • Alternative feed practices to promote responsible use of antimicrobials

Other Matters 

  • Alignment of FAO's work on livestock to the Strategic Framework 2022-31
  • Holistic and evidence-based reporting on the livestock sector
  • Multi-Year Programme of Work of the Committee on Agriculture Sub-Committee on Livestock

Registering for first session of the COAG Sub-Committee on Livestock

Members’ accreditation for the first session of the COAG Sub-Committee on Livestock opened on 18 January 2022, on the Members Gateway. Please note that each delegate will need to insert in the form an email address for accreditation. The same email address should be inserted in the Zoom registration form, to grant the participant access to the virtual meeting platform.

Designated observers are kindly requested to send names, official titles, addresses and email address to attend the Session, by e-mail to [email protected] together with a recent passport-size digital photograph.
