About the webinar

The Challenge Prize Centre has run two agricultural prizes for USAID and Feed the Future in the Data Driven Farming Prize and the Fall Armyworm Tech Prize. The focus of these prizes was on attracting data driven and digital solutions and approaches that could support smallholder farmers either to improve their livelihoods in Nepal or to mitigate the threat of fall armyworm across sub-Saharan Africa.

The scope of this webinar will allow us to introduce the concept of prizes to the ICT/digital/technological agriculture space and take a deep dive into these prize in spurring new innovations to support smallholder farmers across developing contexts. We will highlight some of solutions supported through the prize process from a mobile diagnostic application and a soil moisture mesh network to an A.I, image recognition application and a chatbot training program, as well as discussing the challenges they they faced in building these solutions according to user (farmers) needs and to the local context, and how the prize supported the development of solutions and innovators themselves.

Lastly, we will show the value add of prizes to agricultural technology ecosystem, and how this type of program can allow for conducive and productive innovation to better support all agricultural stakeholders from farms, agri-input suppliers, governments and agricultural research institutions and what impact prizes can have.
