Nigerian coast: agriculture and women suffer from water scarcity

The effects of climate change are evident in the coastal areas of Nigeria, particularly in the Ilaje region of Ondo State in southwestern Nigeria. They result in crop failure, erosion and loss of livelihoods due to extreme weather events such as droughts and floods.
The coastal region of Nigeria is particularly at risk, with a projected one-metre rise in sea level that could result in the loss of 75% of the region's land. Women in the region are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Many depend on agriculture and fishing for their livelihoods and are responsible for water collection and use.
