Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global threat of increasing concern for human and animal health. AMR occurs when micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites) develop resistance to antimicrobial substances, such as antibiotics. As a result, the treatment of diseases using antimicrobials may no longer be possible. This causes treatments to be ineffective, increases mortality, and results in more severe or prolonged illnesses and production losses in agriculture. AMR can occur naturally, but inappropriate and excessive use of antimicrobials in both human health care and in the agricultural sector, speeds up the process. For instance, antimicrobials are used in animal production to preserve animal and public health, but often also for disease prevention purposes and as growth promoters. The feed sector raises its voice and addresses why it matters to reduce the use of antimicrobials in animal production and how animal nutrition can contribute to this purpose. The speakers explain how appropriate animal nutrition and feed can support the health and welfare of the animals, therefore prevent diseases and thus reduce the amount of antimicrobials needed.
