Thursday, 10 February 2022, 11:00am-12:30pm (New York Time)
This side event, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and PARIS21, will look at the potential role of the Global Strategy to Improve Agriculture and Rural Statistics (GSARS), in the development of agricultural statistics in the 25 beneficiary countries.
The objectives of the GSARS and its areas of work will be introduced by the FAO team.
It will be followed by two national presentations: Sidney Nii Oko Bampoe Addo, Director, Statistics, Research and Information Directorate, Ghana Ministry of Food and Agriculture and Aurelio Mate Junior, Head of Statistics Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Mozambique. They will share their experience of introduction of the GSARS plan in their countries, how it fits with the national strategies of development of agricultural statistics and with opportunities offered with the future implementation of 50x2030 Initiative.
An overview of other cases of synergies between the GSARS activities and national agricultural statistics plans in other countries will be also shared by the FAO team.
The meeting will conclude with a Q&A session that will give participants the opportunity to ask questions to the presenters, as well as to share their own challenges and expectations.
The Global Strategy to improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) is a long-term coordinated initiative to address the decline in the agricultural statistical systems in developing countries and enable the production of more and better agricultural statistics. The second phase of the project will continue its work started during Phase 1, with the aim to strengthen the statistical capacities of countries through the provision of training and technical assistance.
