Mongolia is actively engaged in strengthening collaboration efforts to combat foodborne antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as part of the "Action to support implementation of Codex AMR texts (ACT)" project. A delegation from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) visited the country on 12-14 June 2023 to learn more about the project and future steps in the field. 

During the mission, the FAO team discussed antimicrobial use, AMR surveillance, awareness raising, and legal considerations with various stakeholders in the country, including government bodies and committees. The delegation also met with local authorities, veterinarians, and nomadic herders to address foodborne AMR concerns. It was agreed to develop a pilot study to detect AMR in samples obtained from slaughterhouses.   

EnkhturByakharjav, National ACT Project Coordinator in Mongolia, noted that this project helped the country evaluate the AMR situation and surveillance system and identify a list of actions, including developing a Multi-sectoral National Action Plan to control AMR.    

Donors of the ACT project, the representatives from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of the Republic of Korea, also participated in part of this visit.
