“As we transform agrifood systems, food safety is one of the things we have to get right,” says FAO Food Systems and Food Safety Division Director Corinna Hawkes in a video message recorded in early March to invite participation in World Food Safety Day this year on (or around) 7 June. She explains that our food is part of a complex system that involves its production, consumption and everything in between – whether that be processing, transportation or marketing.

In the video, Hawkes also notes that agricultural, food, trade and industry development policies need to be underpinned by science-based food standards to promote food safety.

The theme of World Food Safety Day 2023 is ‘Food standards save lives’, which organizations and individuals may wish to use in their messaging for the observance.
