Rome, April 1, 2025 — The Group of 77 and China convened its first plenary meeting of the year on April 1 at FAO headquarters in Rome, setting a tone of cautious optimism and collective purpose amid budget challenges, and evolving geopolitical dynamics.
Chaired by Mr. Tomás Alberto Duncan Jurado of Panama, the session opened with Eid al-Fitr greetings and a detailed briefing from FAO’s Director of OSP, Ms. Beth Crawford, on the Strategic Framework and the Programme of Work and Budget (PWB) 2026–27.
In preparation for the upcoming 177th Council session, the Chair called for a united G77 & China joint statement emphasizing continued funding for technical work, support for Codex, and enforcement of the long-standing Resolution 9/89 to safeguard TCP.
Calls for internal unity is a recurring theme, with members emphasizing the need for stronger coordination and inclusive processes to ensure the Group speaks with one voice on key issues.
The meeting also addressed internal matters, including financial updates and an event proposal.
With upcoming meetings scheduled for May and June, the Group aims to refine its positions and present a cohesive voice in shaping the future of the FAO—and global development policy at large.
