G77 & China Joint Statement - Meeting of the Governing Bodies of FAO, IFAD, and WFP
Mr. President of IFAD
Director General of FAO
Executive Director of WFP
Distinguished Delegates,
Ladies and Gentlemen, Colleagues,
I have the honor to deliver this statement on behalf of the Group of 77 and China at this important meeting of the governing bodies of FAO, IFAD, and WFP.
The Group of 77 and China wishes to emphasize the importance of continuing to strengthen the joint work of these three Rome-based United Nations agencies. They share a fundamental common goal: to support Member States in their efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty and achieve food and nutritional security for their citizens. This goal is more urgent than ever in a global context marked by interconnected challenges such as climate change, economic crises, conflicts, and environmental degradation.
In this regard, we call on FAO, IFAD, and WFP to unite their efforts more closely, leveraging their respective strengths and mandates. Each of these agencies has specific strategies to support countries in achieving food and nutritional security and responding to the urgent challenge of climate change. Therefore, we urge the definition of joint actions within the framework of these strategies to maximize their impact, including concerning the sustainability of agrifood systems, improved nutrition in developing countries, and increased resilience to climate change.
We recognize that financial resources to address food security and to support sustainable agrifood systems are limited. We are in a challenging scenario where development partners are not showing ambition in providing developing countries with the necessary financing related to the Rio Convention. Hence, it is essential for the three agencies work in harmonious collaboration to more effectively access international financing for agrifood systems, particularly funds for climate adaptation and mitigation. This cooperation will not only optimizeaccess to and the use of resources but also ensure that actions are aligned with the priorities and needs of developing countries, which face the greatest risks and vulnerabilities.
Furthermore, the RBAs play a crucial role in supporting the CFS and implementing its policy products, including their dissemination and effectiveness at the country level. Strengthening the alignment between CFS policy outputs – such as the recently adopted Policy Recommendations on Reducing Inequalities for Food Security and Nutrition – and RBA programming, while also leveraging multi-stakeholder collaboration, will enhance policy coherence, improve support to local implementation, and contribute to global food security and sustainable food systems.
We reiterate the importance of FAO, IFAD and WFP joint efforts to mobilize resources and to explore every possible opportunityto this end with emphasis to generate flexible funding to ensure that any intervention is unfettered and with further focus on reinforcing humanitarian-development-peace nexus namely in protracted crises to secure sustainability.
To conclude, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the joint efforts of FAO, IFAD, and WFP and trust that through greater coordination and synergy, we can move towards a more resilient, sustainable, and just future for all.
Thank you.
