Strengthening national capacity in restoration area mapping and land cover development

06/02/2023 - 09/02/2023

The FAO Geospatial Unit is providing technical assistance to the project “Gums for Adaptation and Mitigation in Sudan (GAMS): Enhancing adaptive capacity of local communities and restoring carbon sink potential of the Gum Arabic belt, expanding Africa’s Great Green Wall (GCP/SUD/083/GCF)” in support of different outputs related to mapping intervention/impact areas, land cover map development, land degradation assessment, restoration monitoring, field data collection and geospatial database management. A training workshop, as a part of this ongoing support, took place on mapping restoration area and land cover map development during 6-9 February 2023 at the Forests National Corporation (FNC) in Khartoum, Sudan. Sixteen participants from the FNC headquarters, state and local offices were trained in mapping restoration areas and land cover map development using several software/platforms including Google Earth Pro, Collect earth Online and SEPAL. Methodological approaches with a workplan and responsibilities for restoration area delineation, land cover mapping and land degradation assessment for Kordofan states were finalized.
