Strengthening Agricultural Value Chain through Geospatial Value Chain Analysis in Myanmar
The agriculture sector is one of the major contributors to Myanmar’s economy. Its share of Myanmar’s GDP is around 30 percent and employs 56 percent of the labour force. Despite its key role in the economy, the country is characterized by fragile agri-food systems. The COVID-19 lockdowns have further exacerbated these challenges and exposed the most vulnerable segments of the population who were already struggling before the pandemic. These segments are now facing extra pressure in terms of income sources, livelihoods and purchasing power, leading to a food security crisis of great magnitude. Based on the exposed situation, a careful analysis of key socio-economic gaps and value chains, productive landscape conditions and ongoing and potential shocks, supported with geospatial technologies, is necessary to identify the key strategies that FAO can support. The project “Strengthening Agricultural Value Chain through Geospatial and Temporal Value Chain Analysis” (TCP/MYA/3806) aims at identifying and characterizing priority agricultural value chains in selected agro-ecological zones with support from national scale geospatial agricultural value chain assessment and prioritization. The FAO Geospatial Unit at the Land and Water division (NSL) provides technical support in using geospatial solutions for assessing Value Chain Analysis in agriculture, forestry and fishery sectors.
