EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Workshop on data collection and submission (WKDATA), was held in Florence, Italy, on 25–26 March 2025. The workshop was attended by 75 experts from GFCM contracting parties and cooperating non-contracting parties (CPCs). The workshop was composed of three sessions that addressed: streamlining GFCM data calls by topic, updates to the Data Collection Reference Framework (DCRF), and the review of the GFCM data confidentiality and access policy. Participants explored a proposal to consolidate data calls across six key fisheries data topics, which would impact current GFCM decisions. Updates to the DCRF were also reviewed, including a new data consultation tracking tool. The FAO Calipseo system was introduced as a flexible, modular tool for national fisheries data management, with its ongoing implementation in select CPCs noted as a step toward alignment with GFCM standards. Additionally, the workshop reviewed the current GFCM data confidentiality framework under Resolution GFCM/35/2011/2, emphasizing secure and limited access to sensitive data. Experts highlighted the need for continued efforts to modernize data access and reporting systems, ensure compliance consistency and strengthen cooperation among CPCs. The outcomes of WKDATA will inform the work of the subregional committees, SAC and CoC, guiding future improvements to the GFCM data governance framework.
